Energy Recovery
For comfort, health, and safety, places where people work require adequate ventilation. However, ventilation air is very expensive to condition from an energy standpoint. When outside air for ventilation is brought into a building or a space, all, or most of it, has to be exhausted to prevent pressure build up inside the building. The building owner or tenant has already paid to heat or cool the air that’s being exhausted, so a great deal of money is spent on energy costs. Energy Savings
As we know, ventilation air is very expensive to heat, cool, and dehumidify. Re-circulated air that returns to the unit from the conditioned space is typically 75 F and 50% relative humidity. To cool and dehumidify the air, the air conditioning unit cools it from 75 F down to 55 F and removes moisture at the same time.

Ventilation air brought in from the outside on a hot summer day can be from 92 F to 105 F or higher if the building is located in the desert southwest. It takes a lot more energy to cool air from 92 or 95 F to 55 F and that’s why energy recovery makes so much sense.

Energy recovered by the MJC Air to Air Plate Energy Recovery Unit is used to cool down the incoming air from 95 F to around 81 or 82 F in most applications, which reduces the work the air conditioner has to do, thus saving utility costs. These units work the same way for wintertime heating by recovering heat and moisture from the air being exhausted and adding it to the incoming ventilation air.

Moisture & Comfort
Much of the discomfort we feel indoors, comes from having too much or too little moisture in the air. The MJC Air to Air Plate Energy Recovery unit removes moisture from the incoming air in the summer and adds moisture to the incoming air in the winter; saving energy and making the occupants feel more comfortable.

Lower Maintenance Cost
At the heart of the MJC unit is an air-to-air plate heat exchanger. Unlike “wheel” type units, the air-to-air plate heat exchanger has no bearings, belt, gears, or motor and under normal use can be cleaned with a shop vacuum.

Problem:

Facility managers struggle with maintaining HVAC units. Coil cleaning is often one of the most neglected maintenance requirements. To truly keep coils clean and performing to original specifications, coils may need to be cleaned 4 times per year (quarterly)– which is expensive, labor and chemical intensive… and unrealistic.

Solution:

EVERGREEN UV Coil Optimization Technology (ECO-­‐UV) is specifically engineered for the ideal treatment of coils, engineered sand scaled specifically for the coil’s exact height, width, and CFM of the HVAC system.

Background:

Biofilm naturally accumulates on all cooling coil fins, reducing thermal energy transfer and air volume, while increasing static pressure and air speed (less contact time with cooling fins); Biofilm also serves as the ‘glue’ that attracts and holds particulates that bypass filtration, causing coil fouling and efficiencies to decline rapidly. Biofilm causes all AHU components to work harder, including chiller plants and fan motors.

ASHRAE states: “Damp coil and drain pan conditions are excellent forums for growth of bacteria and mold (biofilm). Coil fouling caused by growth of bacteria and mold increases coil pressure drop and reduces airflow, reducing heat transfer from coil fins to lessen the amount of work a system can perform”.

Never heard of an Air Turnover unit? Then allow us to explain it to you. An Air Turnover unit is a large air handler, used to supply and return large quantities of air without ductwork. The process is simple – a mass of air is discharged at or near the top of the space and the same quantity of air is returned from floor level. The air mass exchange results in a turnover of space volume.
