How Much Do You Know About Commercial HVAC Coatings?

Architectural CoatingsDid you know that corrosion in commercial HVAC units is responsible for 40% of the equipment failures? And, should your business have a seaside location and not have the HVAC unit properly protected then the operating performance of unprotected condenser coils may decrease over 50% in a single year!  This deterioration may happen over time and not be discovered for as many as four years or it can happen in just months and can require that the entire system be replaced – definitely not a budget friendly activity!

Types of HVAC Corrosion

The corrosion is generally manifested in one of two ways – pitting or formicary – and neither of them are something you want to hear mentioned. Pitting is typically caused by the coil being exposed to fluoride or chloride while formicary corrosion is due to exposure to acids such as those found in cleaning solvents, insulation, adhesives, paints and many other materials. Formicary corrosion can be more subtle and take a bit longer to be discovered, while pitting usually moves quickly and will form holes that cause the coils to leak refrigerant.

As neither of these situations is desired, it is important that you have a coating added to your commercial HVAC unit. At MJC, we offer 3 types of coatings: anti-microbial, anti-corrosive, and architectural coatings.

Anti-Corrosive HVAC Coatings

This is an epoxy based primer with a urethane UV protective top coat. It is applied to the tube sheet (aka, coil surface) the headers and the refrigeration circuits. This process exceeds industry standards, and is perfect for providing corrosion protection in both salt air or chemical environments.

Anti-Microbial HVAC Coatings

Like our anti-corrosive coating, this is coating goes above and beyond industry standards; it is designed to protect your commercial HVAC unit against corrosion, but it goes a step further, and works as a preventative against bio growth on painted surfaces. Also noteworthy, the coating has a miniscule effect on the heat transference of the coil or the pressure drop through the coil.

Architectural HVAC Coatings

No matter the needs of your commercial HVAC unit, we have a coating to protect it. Regardless of the type of unit you have, we can design a coating that matches your building. In fact, we have matched our architectural coating colors to rooftops, company colors and even industry safety colors. We use the highest quality coatings, which are designed to resist abrasion, chemicals, marring, chipping, and scratching.

You don’t want to make the investment of a state of the art HVAC system only to have it need to be repaired due to corrosion. No matter where your business is located, it is vital that your HVAC unit have the proper coating. Talk to us today to determine which type of HVAC coating is best for your space.
